Everything you need before twisting the throttle in Lombok — licenses, police checkpoints, road conditions and how to rent a scooter that will not strand you.
The license question, answered honestly
You need an International Driving Permit with a motorcycle endorsement, carried together with your home license. Police checkpoints around Kuta and the Senggigi road do check, and the fine is the least of it — your travel insurance is void without the right paperwork if you crash.
If you do not have the endorsement, ride pillion with a guide instead. It is the same views, zero paperwork, and someone else does the work.
What the roads are actually like
The main coastal road around Kuta is smooth and quiet by Southeast Asian standards. The surprises are the sand drifts on corners, the dogs asleep in the middle of the lane, and the unmarked speed bumps outside every village.
Dirt lanes to the best beaches are rideable at walking pace on any scooter. Rain changes everything — red Lombok clay is ice-rink slippery, so check the sky before committing to a dirt detour.
Renting a scooter that will not strand you
Rent from a shop your accommodation or guide trusts, not the cheapest sign on the strip. Check the brakes, both tires, the horn and the lights before you pay. Photograph existing scratches.
Expect to pay around IDR 75–100k per day for a Honda Vario or Scoopy in good condition. A helmet is legally required and non-negotiable — insist on one that fits.
